Alpheus S. Williams to George B. McClellan Robert E. Lee: Special Orders No. 191

On September 13, in a roadside field, an Indiana soldier found a lost copy of General Lee’s instructions for dividing his army to accomplish the capture of the Union garrison at Harpers Ferry. The Lost Order made its way to Alpheus Williams, commanding the Twelfth Corps, who forwarded it, along with a covering note, to General McClellan. “Here is a paper,” McClellan told one of his generals, “with which if I cannot whip Bobbie Lee, I will be willing to go home.”
